ABOUT THE ARTIST

I am a painter, and work both in soft pastel, and oil. I love to blur the line between abstraction and representation, in both pastel and Oil and cold wax medium.

For the past year, I have been immersed in developing an exciting new body of work using oil and cold wax, and am greatly enjoying exploring this new medium. I will be adding more of my new work in stages in the coming months.

I am still best known for my work in soft pastel, which has been my primary focus for many years. My paintings have been exhibited widely, including national and international juried exhibitions, and have received numerous awards. In 2018, my Aerial Series was featured in a 10 page article in Pastel Magazine. In 2019 I was awarded Signature Membership in Pastel Society of America (PSA).

I have a BFA from the Boston Museum School in partnership with Tufts University, and  have studied since then with many accomplished artists and teachers. Pastelists Liz Haywood Sullivan, Jeanne Rosier Smith, and Michele Poirier-Mozzone; oil painters Tim Hawkesworth, Jon Redmond, Margaret McQwethy, and Melinda Cootsona, as well as the founders of Cold Wax Academy— Rebecca Crowell, and Jerry McLaughlin. I have learned so much from all of them!

I live and work in The Eclipse Mill Artist Lofts in North Adams, MA

Lovely work! I also live on Cape Cod. I dabble in watercolors. I loved your explanation of the Sandy Neck pastel piece, how you approached the layering and the light, very interesting. It seems a lot of my life is now about “chasing the light”. Marian

Thanks so much for visiting my blog. I am glad you enjoyed the piece about Sandy Neck. I plan to do another version of this, larger. Glad I still have the sketch to work from.

I love the image if the boy entering the water in the pastel which I bought at the Pastel Society show. I gave it to my grown son for his house since it reminded me of him at the Cape when he was about 11 or 12. I’m an artist also and I appreciate your skill with using pastels.

Joan, thank you for your comment! It’s so nice to know where the piece ended up. I love that you gave it to your son. I just sold the larger piece that was used on the card for my show in Hingham.

It’s so nice to know as an artist that others connect with what you’re doing. Is your site joanbaldwin.com? If so, love your work! If not, I’d love to see what you’re doing.

It is so nice to know that those who love arts pursue it because that is what they wanted. I adore you for that Dianne. Not all people knows how to appreciate art and it makes me so happy that there are still people out there who are interested in art. Like you, I love painting, especially the nature. I am so fascinated how the nature looks like and it calms me every time I go take a walk and even just by merely sitting at the park. I am hoping we can meet someday to share our ideas. Keep it up Miss Dianne!
